Working from home demands focus, consistency, and long hours in front of your screen. But if you have a dog, you already know how challenging it can be to balance your work responsibilities while keeping your furry companion happy and engaged.
Dogs are incredibly loyal and social animals. They thrive on attention, interaction, and routine—and when left alone or ignored for long periods, they can become bored, anxious, or even destructive.
That’s why it’s important to find smart and practical ways to keep your dog entertained while you work. In this guide, you’ll discover simple, effective strategies to keep your dog mentally stimulated, relaxed, and content—so you can stay productive without guilt.
- Training Session- When you’re free, spend just 10 minutes on a quick training session with your dog. Practice basic commands like sit, stay, and come, and slowly introduce fun tricks like roll over or shake hands. It’s a simple way to keep your dog mentally active and well-behaved. It won’t keep them busy for hours by itself, however it mentally tires your dog, and creates a calm mindset.
- Digging spot– You can put a big pile of dirt in one corner of the yard. Dog will love digging there and stop digging in other parts of the yard.
- Herding Ball– A herding ball can be a great way to keep your dog busy, especially for active dogs with strong herding instincts. It helps them burn energy and stay engaged. However, it works best if your dog enjoys chasing and has enough space to play.
- Dog sitter or friendly seniors– You can hire a dog sitter to play with your dog and keep them busy with fun activities. If you don’t want to spend money, you can also connect with elderly people nearby who enjoy spending time with dogs—they’ll love the company, and your dog gets a playmate too.
- Get a cat as a companion-You can bring a cat home so your dog has a friend to play with. If they are introduced at a young age and grow up together, they can become good friends
- Cartoons on YouTube – Some dogs enjoy watching TV, while others don’t. You can try playing dog cartoons on YouTube and see if your dog likes watching TV or not.
- Use Interactive toys– You can buy toys from West Paw like the West Paw Zogoflex Toppl Toy and West Paw Qwizl Dog Treat Toy. These toys help keep your dog mentally active and can keep them busy for a long time.
- Untie knot game – Some dogs love to untie knots. You can take old socks, sheets, clothes, or ropes and tie them into a big ball of knots. Your dog will spend a long time trying to open them, and once they’re done, they’ll want to play again. It’s a simple way to keep them busy.
- Crating – You can use a crate to keep your dog safe and calm while you work. Start with simple crate games and short sessions so your dog gets comfortable with it. Over time, your dog will see the crate as a relaxing and secure space.
- Freeze meals: I freeze my dog’s meals (kibble) in water, making a giant kibble ice cube in his food bowl. This keeps him busy and has given me up to half an hour of peace and quiet.
- Destruction box – Fill a box with safe items and hidden treats for your dog to tear apart and explore. It keeps them busy and satisfies their natural urge to chew and dig.
